Scholarship Opportunities

This year we are pleased to offer two scholarship opportunities that allow recipients to attend our 2020 annual conference and receive a critique or portfolio review free of charge. For more information about the conference, click here.

Entries must be received by November 15, 2019 and winners will be announced in late November

1) The Jack Reid Memorial Scholarship: In memory of longtime volunteer Jack Reid, the MD/DE/WV SCBWI Region offers two scholarships, one for a writer and one for an illustrator, to the March conference.  Applicants must be current SCBWI members, living within our MD/DE/WV region and not currently represented by a literary agent or with a project (manuscript or illustrations) currently under contract. Submissions will be judged anonymously by the scholarship committee.

2) The RA Scholarship is awarded to a first-time attendee of the MD/DE/WV Regional Conference who has demonstrated both financial need and a serious focus on their creative work that indicates they will benefit from attending the conference and receiving a critique. You do not need to be a member of SCBWI to apply for this scholarship, and authors and illustrators in any stage of their career may apply, whether they are published or not. The Co-Regional Advisors will select winners of this scholarship. If funds allow, multiple RA Scholarships may be awarded.

Illustrators are also encourage to enter our Conference Logo contest!

NOTE: You may apply for both scholarships using the same form. Simply indicate which scholarship(s) you wished to be considered for based on your eligibility.

Submissions Guidelines:
All applicants must fill out the application form at one of the links below, including:
-a brief biography focusing on activities/education relevant to writing/illustration for young readers (maximum 200 words)

-a statement describing how attending the MD/DE/WV Region conference and receiving a critique would benefit you and your work.

-a manuscript sample of up to 10 pages (for writers) or 3 sample illustrations (for illustrators)
