About the webinar:

The issue of cultural accuracy and authenticity is not as simple as whether the author is a cultural insider or outsider to his or her subject matter. Vital errors can occur in either case, as can authentic writing. This webinar will introduce and practice a process for vetting cultural content before publication that is applicable to many cultures and situations. The session focuses on un-narrated or mis-narrated elements of stories of others whose general lack of representation contributes to the invisibility of their needs, concerns, and pain. The discussion examines stories about people of color and spans all different forms of diversity, including race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, class, age, and different levels of ability, with concrete examples that represent authentic and inauthentic stories about others and how a vetting cultural content may bring together disparate groups of insiders and outsiders. The presenter will demonstrate some of the current practices and discussions on speaking for others and speaking about others in children’s literature with the hope to practically contribute to the diversification of future children’s books.

About the presenter:

Taraneh Matloob is an associate professor of literacy education at the University of Northern Iowa. She has ten years of college teaching experience and four years as a faculty member. As a faculty, she embraces teaching multicultural children’s literature as a viable way to promote culturally inclusive pedagogies in teacher education. The research findings led her to create a process for vetting cultural content before publication that is applicable to many cultures and situations. This process can be used as a basis for vetting cultural content in manuscripts during the editorial process. Also, Dr. Matloob is an energetic member of the professional children’s literature as well as educational technology communities. She has extensive local, national, and international conference presentation record and has served as a reviewer on School Library JournalFirst Opinions―Second Reactions, the International Research Society for Children’s Literature, the Lion and the Unicorn and also as a cultural ambassador for the state of Iowa at the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY). Taraneh is also an author of five picture books. Critiquing: Picture book fiction; Middle grade fiction.
