January-June 2023 Creative Coaching Groups: A 6-Month Mentorship Program

Date/Time
Date(s) - 01/01/2023
12:00 am

Category(ies)

This 6-month mentorship program, available only to SCBWI members, will connect you with a published mentor author or illustrator who will provide detailed written feedback on your work each month and conduct monthly online small group meetings that provide support, brainstorming, and community. You will also have the opportunity to improve your craft through peer critiques. Each cohort will be capped at 3-6 participants.

This program is geared to participants who:
– have a manuscript or portfolio completed or in progress.
– have been attending a critique group regularly and are beginning to get positive feedback on your work or have a few manuscripts under your belt.
– have published in other fields or other genres of children’s books and want to break into something new.
-are experienced writers or illustrators but just not sure about a new project.
-are looking for feedback to take their work to the next level.

Each Creative Coaching Group includes:
Monthly mentor critiques: You will submit your work for critique each month and receive a detailed written critique from your mentor, for a total of 6 critiques. (See submission details below for each cohort.) It’s up to you whether you want to submit new work each month, or revise your work and resubmit for another pass. Illustrators will also have the option to follow targeted illustration prompts.

Monthly peer critiques: You will complete a monthly written peer critique for each of the other members of your cohort, and receive written critiques from your peers each month. (See cohort details below for maximum numbers in each group.)

Online group meetings: You’ll meet with your mentor and cohort for seven 60-90 minute meetings.  (See groups and dates below.) These live online meetings will be a chance to ask questions, brainstorm, get clarification about critiques, and receive craft and career guidance tailored to the needs of the group.

Email group: Your cohort will connect via an email listserv facilitated through Google Groups. This will be your place to share resources, ask questions, and connect with your cohort.

This session of Creative Coaching Groups will run January to June 2023.

General registration for this program will open on December 1, 2022.

IMPORTANT REGISTRATION DETAILS:

You must be logged in to your SCBWI account in order to register.

Each mentor will send access instructions for your first session to all registrants in your cohort in early January.

See cohort details above for submission and critique deadlines and online meeting dates.

This program is open to all SCBWI members, and there is no screening requirement. Please check to make sure you meet the experience level requirements for the group you register for, to make the mentorship program the best possible experience for everyone.

Cancellation policy: No refunds will be given after December 20, 2022.

Participant Agreements: In registering for the Creative Coaching Group 6-Month Mentorship Program, you agree to the following:

  • -You will be expected to complete 2-5 peer critiques each month (depending on cohort size). If you have an emergency and need an extension, you must discuss this with your mentor.
  • -If you fail to either complete your peer critiques or request an extension, you will not be eligible to submit a manuscript for critique the following month, but will still be responsible for completing your peer critiques the following month.
  • -Group live sessions may be recorded and the recordings made available to the group participants for 30 days.
  • -If you miss a submission deadline, you may forfeit that month’s critiques from both mentor and peers.
  • -You may not use, in part, or in whole, any aspect of a fellow mentee’s manuscript or basic concept in your own work. Violating this rule is considered plagiarism and can be prosecuted by law.
  • -If you violate the terms laid out above, you may be asked to leave the group and will not receive a refund.

Click on the “SCBWI Member” ticket to see available cohorts. Registration will open on December 1, 2022 and close on December 26, 2022.

Waiting list: If the session you want is full, OR if the online meeting dates for your desired cohort simply don’t work for you, please fill out our Waiting List Form. We may form additional cohorts if there is enough interest. Filling out this form does not commit you to anything; it simply allows us to assess interest and contact you if additional spots open up.

International members only: If our payment system isn’t processing your credit card or PayPal payment, email mddewv-ra@scbwi.org to request an alternate method of payment. Please include your name and address in your request.

If you have any questions, please contact mddewv@scbwi.org.

General registration for this program will open on December 1, 2022. Ticket information will appear below at that time.
