From board books to young adult, big press to small press, indie to work for hire to traditional publishing, the world of children’s literature is as vibrant and varied as the kids and teens who read it. Join us as a lively panel of kidlit authors share their experiences and lessons from all over the kidlit kingdom. Featuring authors Carole Lindstrom, Jonathan Roth, and Lakita Wilson. Moderated by Kathy MacMillan.

Carole Lindstrom is an Anishinaabe/Métis author, and an enrolled citizen of the Turtle Mountain Band of Ojibwe. She writes books for children and young adults, including We Are Water Protectors (Winner of the 2021 Caldecott Medal), illustrated by Michaela Goade, (Roaring Brook Press), Girls Dance, Boys Fiddle (Pemmican Publishers), Drops of Gratitude in the anthology Thank U: Poems of Gratitude, edited by Miranda Paul and illustrated by Marlena Myles, (Lerner/Millbrook), and Circles, included in the anthology, Ancestor Approved: Intertribal Stories for Kids, edited by Cynthia Leitich Smith, (Heartdrum – Feb 2021). She is represented by Andrea Brown Literary Agency.

Jonathan Roth writes and illustrates chapter books (the Beep and Bob series) and graphic novels (the forthcoming Rover and Speck series). He also has drawers filled with many other brilliant (and not-so-brilliant) books and projects, because published work is always just the tip of the iceberg. By day he teaches elementary art in Montgomery County, where he lives with his wife, two cats and three or more bicycles.

Lakita Wilson is a Professor of Education and the recipient of 2017’s SCBWI On-The-Verge Emerging Voices Award. Lakita also holds an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Vermont College of Fine Arts. She does Write-For-Hire work for publishers like Penguin Random House and MacMillan, and the book packager Alloy. Her original middle grade novel and YA project will be out through Philomel/Penguin Random House in 2022.

Moderator Kathy MacMillan (she/her) is a writer, nationally certified American Sign Language interpreter, librarian, and signing storyteller. She writes picture books (The Runaway Shirt, the Little Hands Signing series), children’s nonfiction (She Spoke), middle grade (The Chronicles of Cavallon) and young adult fiction (Sword and Verse and Dagger and Coin). She has also published eight resource books for educators, librarians, and parents. Kathy is the co-Regional Advisor for the Maryland/Delaware/West Virginia Region of the Society for Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI). She is represented by Steven Malk of Writers House.
