Do you feel like you’re drifting on the sea of picture books, but don’t know how to reach your publication destination? This session will cover all of the picture book basics needed to write or revise your picture book. We’ll begin with formatting, word count and types of picture books. Then we’ll delve into story structure, pacing, character, and revision. You’ll leave with a map to help you on your journey. Attendees with picture book manuscripts should plan to bring one copy to refer to during the session, although this is not a requirement.
About the presenter:
Nikki Shannon Smith is the author of eleven books, ranging from picture books to young adult. Her work includes the Azaleah Lane chapter book series and four titles in Capstone’s multi-author, historical fiction/adventure, middle grade series, Girls Survive. Nikki also wrote A Star Like Jesse Owens, a Smithsonian Historical Fiction title about the 1936 Olympics. Her forthcoming titles include Our Beautiful Colors (Little Golden Books/Random House, 2022), a four-title board book series called Brown Baby Parade (Random House, 2022, 2023) and a fifth Girls Survive title about the Tulsa Race Massacre (2022). Her writing is informed not only by her research, but by her child-like curiosity and nearly thirty years of elementary school teaching experience. Nikki teaches masterclasses for young writers’ programs as well as writing workshops for adults. She is represented by Jennifer March Soloway of Andrea Brown Literary Agency.
