Marketing is a challenge for many authors and illustrators, but publishers expect it, and done well marketing will benefit your books and your career. In this webinar, Susan Raab, President of Raab Associates will conduct live marketing consults on books for multiple age groups and on a wide range of subjects. She’ll discuss how to make books stand out in a crowded field and how to establish an effective marketing story authors and illustrators can use throughout their career. You’ll learn what makes an effective pitch, and how to best position your books to publishers, the media and others who can impact your success. Susan will also discuss how to manage your time effectively, so you can strike a good balance between your creative work and marketing. Susan will also offer a limited number of 1-page written marketing consults following the webinar. (Submission date for written consults will be one week after the webinar to allow participants time to revise using what they have learned.)

Susan will give live marketing consults during the webinar for:

  • 4 picture books
  • 1 experienced author (book for any age)
  • 1 illustrator
  • 1 first time author (book for any age)
  • 1 self-published author (helpful if the book is non-fiction or topical)

*If availability permits, in-webinar critique slots may be opened to nonmembers after May 31, 2019 for $60 each. If you are not a member of SCBWI and are interested in registering for or upgrading to an in-webinar critique slot, please contact mddewv@scbwi.org.


About the presenter:

Susan Raab is president of Raab Associates, a marketing agency internationally recognized for literary marketing and technology consulting. She has promoted books, toys, games, music, awards, technology, and arts organizations. Clients have included National Geographic, Penguin Random House, Scholastic Inc., The American Girls Collection, the International Board on Books for Young People, The Jane Addams Peace Association, The Julie Andrews Collection, Wizards of the Coast (D&D), and bestselling authors and illustrators.

Susan is Marketing Advisor to the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators and marketing columnist for The SCBWI Bulletin. She’s reported on arts education and publishing for publications and news services and has been a broadcast correspondent nationally syndicated on public radio. Susan has also served as market advisor to literature centers at Bank Street College, the University of Connecticut, and the University of Florida.

A recording of the webinar will be available for one month after the live event. The recording will be for registered attendees only, so if you can’t make the live event, you can register to view the recording.

Access information for the live webinar will be sent to all registered attendees via email on the morning of the webinar and access information on the recording will be sent out the following day.

Those who select the registration option with in-webinar marketing plan critique must submit the following information to mddewv@scbwi.org by June 7:

Basic information:

  • Your name and pen name, if applicable
  • Book title
  • Publisher (or indicate if self-published)
  • You website url

Briefly answer the following questions:

  1. What prompted you to want to do this story? Or, in case of illustrator, what kinds of books do you illustrate or want to do?
  2. What have you done on social media?
  3. What do you think is most important about this book?
  4. Anything else helpful to know?

NOTE: If you register for one of the in-webinar critique slots and your book does not fit the category you signed up for, you will be switched to view-only webinar registration and will be refunded the difference.
